Course Description
Seminar, three hours. Limited to juniors/seniors. Study of selected topics of sociological interest. Reading, discussion, and development of culminating project. Consult "Schedule of Classes" for topics and instructors. May be repeated for credit and may be applied as elective units toward Sociology major. Letter grading.
Class Description
Introduction to methods for linking theory to data by means of concepts as variables; and for methods of obtaining, storing, and constructing variables in big or complex data sets. Topics include basics of data science, data sourcing, web scraping, data management in relational databases, basic data analysis, and dataset construction. Exploration of how databases are used, their role in quantitative analysis, and how data science more broadly is used in social sciences.
