Graduate individual study or research courses are numbered as follows: 596 (directed individual study or research); 597 (preparation for the master’s comprehensive examination or doctoral qualifying examination); 598 (master’s thesis research and preparation); and 599 (doctoral dissertation research and preparation). Certain 500 series courses, with limitations as to their use, have been approved by the Graduate Council for Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading for application to the minimum course requirements for master’s degrees, or for repetition for credit. The same method of grading (letter or S/U) is determined in advance for all of the students enrolled in a particular course.
